Monthly Newsletter — March 2010

Section 2

March 2010 newsletter continued from Section 1

Young Eagles News
I am the Young Eagles Coordinator for EAA Chapter 1121 and am contacting you to inquire as to whether the members of your chapter would be willing to assist with our upcoming Young Eagles event. This year's Mt Comfort/EAA Young Eagles event will be a bit different from years past. Instead of advertising and opening it up to the public, this year's event will be held in conjunction with the Boy Scout 2010 Camporee at the Mount Comfort Airport during the weekend of April 9 through April 11. Three hundred scouts will camp on the airport grounds and work towards earning their Aviation Merit Badge. Rolls Royce and the Vincennes University Aviation School have joined in this event and are bringing in engine and aircraft cutaways to teach the scouts about both GA equipment and careers in aviation. Other groups will present on aerodynamics, avionics, radio procedures and more.

The highlight of this aviation event will be a flight with an EAA volunteer. Chapter 1121 is recruiting pilots from the central Indiana area and is hoping for assistance from your chapter. The event will be held on April 10, 2010. The pilots briefing will be at 8:15 a.m. and flights start at 9:00 AM. The hope is to have 30 flight seats for the Scouts. This should allow us to finish between 1:00 and 2:00 PM. As always, we will have coffee, donuts and snacks on hand for you. The Scouts have also invited us to eat with them.

This will be our biggest Young Eagles event to date and we need all the flight crew support we can get. If any of your chapter members are willing to participate, please have them give me a call at (317) 374-4101 or e-mail me at Rosanne.ang@sbcglobal.net. It's a wonderful experience and at the end of the day it is just as rewarding for the pilots as it is for the kids. Please join us in this effort to help the local Boy Scouts and keep the young ones interested in aviation.

Regards,

    March's Program
    By Michael Mossman

For the past several years, Chapter 1311 has made a tradition of visiting Troy Grover's Grov-Air shop during the winter months to see what's new at his local RV Builder's Assistance Center.

The main attraction this year is a highly modified RV-8 undergoing construction. The most noticeable modification is the raised "turtledeck" behind the rear passenger. Troy didn't know if the raised turtledeck decreased drag and therefore increased speed, but cool looks are worth the extra effort. Taking advantage of the extra internal height in turtledeck, the rear baggage space instantly became larger. Troy went one further: he extended the floor of the baggage compartment back by one additional bulkhead, then closed it off at the back with a removable panel. The longer baggage space now contains enough length for a set of golf clubs, or at this builder intends, some snow boards. Jim Winings added that the extra length is a great place to store hats, blankets or pillows, all without adversely affecting your weight and balance.

This RV also features a side-tilt canopy, which Troy claims is much easier for the pilot and passenger to board. A great feature of the side-tilt canopy is that there is no structure from where the slide-back canopies join with front windscreen, leaving an unrestricted visibility where it counts — up and forward. Troy says there will be a few welded tubes bolted to the fuselage between the front and rear seats for roll-over protection.

Another Grov-Air modification concerns instrument panels, which is one of Troy's specialties. If you have ever tried to work on behind an instrument panel after the aircraft is finished, you know how awkward and painful it is to get your eyes and hands into position to do the work. Adding to the awkwardness is the fact that an RV-8 's fuselage is narrow, so you really need to be nimble to lay down on the floor, roll over and reach up behind the panel. Grov-Air has a better way: he fabricated a removable panel in the rear wall of the RV-8's front baggage compartment. Now instrument access is easy; just remove about a dozen machine screws from the panel, drop it down (it is hinged at the bottom), and reach in. Troy says that the bulkhead across the back of the baggage compartment is a structural member, so he couldn't use quick-release fasteners; He needed machine screws and nut plates for structural integrity.

Other plans for the RV-8 include an engine with fuel injection.

Grov-Air has an RV-9 in the shop that is coming along nicely; it is being built by a local guy. The RV-9 had half of the engine cowling installed, allowing visitors a close look at the nice, clean installation. He's also got his "company plane," and RV-10 empennage, in the shop.

Instrument panels have been one of Grov-Air's specialties. Troy builds custom composite panels with laser-cut aluminum sheet inserts for RV builders all over the world. He currently has an RV-6A customer's panel that is destined for Sussex, United Kingdom. That owner is also building an RV-12. Troy's current plans are to go to England in May to install the panel.

The economy hasn't been kind to the aviation industry, and the homebuilding market has taken some hits, too. Troy has been working hard to keep his shop productively busy. He continues to host his two-day weekend builder's class, and is now developing an avionics class and a fiberglass class. Those classes should be popular, considering the great many RV builders who are working on their first project. He keeps busy with the custom panels and modifications, assisting the RV8 and RV-9 builders, and doing annual condition inspections on many RVs in the area.

Last year Grov-Air had an RV-6 in the shop that was owned by the principals from Grand Rapids Technologies. They brought it back to Grand Rapids to conserve some cash while they are developing some new instrumentation, then plan on bringing it back to complete the restoration.
