Local Chapters Visit Tom Wood's Hangar
Mechanic Wayne Hershman greeted the visitors in the lobby of the building then escorted us to Wood's hangar. He didn't give a lot of direction, like "don't touch" or "be careful." Basically, it was have fun, take photos and feel this share of history.
Wood's is no museum relic; this P-51D Mustang has been to many local fly-ins and aviation events. It's had its share of mishaps and damage but his crews keep it put together and in great flying and displaying condition. He obviously doesn't worry too much about fingerprints and wear around the cockpit; Hershman assisted many of the visitors up over the side and into the cockpit for a one-in-a-lifetime test-fit of a real Mustang. But not everyone took him up on the opportunity. More than one onlooker commented that the young men flying fighters in WW-II were much smaller than the average Americans of today. Six feet tall appeared to be too tall to fit in the cockpit, and unfortunately many of us are now too wide to fit in, anyway.
One of the most unusual items in his collection is his Convair Saberjet. You just don't see many military jets in the hands of private collectors, as it can cost a fortune to fuel them. As will all of his airplanes in the hangar, the ladder was propped up to the cockpit so that visitors could take a look at the business office of a Cold War fighting machine.
Wood also has a Beechcraft Bonanza that looks like a museum piece, not a working man's transport. Even so, visitors could paw all over it and admire its beautiful interior and well-equipped panel. It has five seats and a conventional but well-equipped panel.
The smallest aircraft in the collected displayed that Saturday was his four-seat Lancair experimental.
Other items on display include a Packard-built Rolls-Royce V-12 engine and an 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney radial engine, most likely as spares for the Mustang and Bearcat, respectively.
Lots of kids came with their parents to see the airplanes and many were boosted up into the cockpits to see what a real aircraft looks like from the inside out. I was most encouraged by the interest shown by a few teens and am hopeful that the little kids there will also get the aviation bug in a few years.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 6:30 p.m., in the Operations Building at Hendricks County Airport, Danville IL. Program: Reschedule of presentation by Bill Whitsitt about his company Xwind's Crosswind Landing Simulator. Whitsitt's experience as a CFI is that it takes a Student/Pilot about 90 crosswind landings to become proficient. The simulator gives the Student/Pilot an opportunity to concentrate on that one minute or less that is critical for a good crosswind landing.
Take U.S. 36 (Rockville Road) west past Avon.
Turn left (south) on CR 300 E (84 Lumber is on the SW) corner of the intersection.
At about 1/2 mile turn right (west) into the airport.
The operations building is straight back from the road.

By Michael Mossman
On Saturday, February 28, 2009, several members and guests from Chapter 1311 joined Chapter 67 (Noblesville) in a hands-on, ropes-down tour of auto dealer Tom Wood's hangar at Signature Air, located on Indianapolis International Airport.
The first aircraft that a visitor sees is a Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat with its wings folded, just as if it were on the storage deck of an aircraft carrier. Wood's mechanics have a rolling stairs placed by the Bearcat so that visitors can climb up onto the wing and take a look in the cockpit. It's amazing that such a wide, barrel-shaped airplane has such a tiny cockpit. I hadn't realized that the Bearcat had fabric-covered control surfaces. Gus Gustafson was wondering if they used PK screws to hold the fabric down, but the fabric across the ribs was too smooth to hide any screws. I could help but be awed by the size of the propeller blades, which are larger in chord and length than my entire ailerons! And there are four of them.
Opened up for service and with its guts exposed for all to see, Wood's North American SNJ-4 gave visitors a rare chance to see the inner workings of an antique military aircraft. When Chapter 1311 visited in January 2003, it was in the same condition: dismantled. Six years have passed so it's more likely that his crew is doing another repair or annual rather than still working on the same job.
Although most folks are fascinated in Wood's warbirds, his general aviation machines also garner their fair share of attention. His Cessna Citation 560 XL is always open for visitors to look inside and see how comfortably a business executive can travel. His Citation has ten extremely soft white leather seats, with the hardware trimmed in gold. The instrument panel is full glass.
Tom Wood has 11 auto dealerships, representing 16 brands in four states. He also owns a mortgage company and a leasing company.
My favorite time of the year is just about here Fly-In season! If you have an aircraft and are looking for places to go, we've got some great locations and events. The following is a list of fly-ins and other aviation events located in Indiana and adjacent states. If you don't have an aircraft but are willing to drive, the list below is round-trip "do-able" in a day. We can't guarantee that every fly-in is listed. Also, we strongly recommend that you contact the event before committing your 100LL. However, we guarantee that if you visit some of these you'll have some great fun.
