Chapter 1311 Builders' Local Resource Directory
We've all been around town trying to scrounge up a few AN bolts or perhaps some 4130 tubing to finish a last-minute weekend building or repair project. How much easier would it be to know where the best supplies of quality parts and materials are?

Northwest Lumber Company, 5035 Lafayette Road, Indianapolis, IN 46254, 317-293-1100, http://www.northwestlumberco.com. Stock of quality woods and woodworking tools.

Start thinking of the places where you locally buy for AN hardware, sheet metal, paint, tools and other items. We'll need an address, phone number and web site, if they have one. Be sure to let us know if you would recommend them to others or not. The idea here is that members should be able to look to suppliers that you trust and would continue to do business with. Please forward your ideas and recommendations to Michael Mossman at michaelandkatie1@comcast.net

Check out our online directory at http://www.eaa1311.org. Click on the link "Homebuilder's Resources" on the left. Note that all resources listed are merely suggestions; as a chapter we do not endorse any of them. Our recommendation: "Caveat Emptor" (let the buyer beware).

January's Program
By Michael Mossman

EAA Chapter 1311 member Skip Budny, is crazy about helicopters. He joined the military just after receiving his draft notice. He was assigned to Fort Rucker in Kansas, where he was trained to be a helicopter mechanic. Thinking flying would be more fun then working on helicopters, he asked for a reassignment. After taking the examination twice, he passed and found himself in flight school.

Budny's basic training helicopter was in a Hiller H-23 D-model helicopter. From there he transitioned to a Bell 47, A and B models, also qualifying to fly the tandem rotor aircraft. One Flight School requirement was that he needed to sign up for three years. Skip did so and in 1964 found himself headed to Vietnam with 109 hours of helicopter flight experience. Once in Vietnam, Skip was assigned to the UTT (Utility, Tactical and Transport) Unit, which was the first armed helicopter company in the history of the armed services. Skip started with the "A" model Hueys, which were quickly upgraded to the more powerful "B" model Hueys.

During his Vietnam days, Budny and his fellow pilots constantly looked for more ways to haul more powerful ordnance and sometimes modified their aircraft to accommodate these weapons. Sometimes it worked; other times the modifications had adverse affects on the aircraft's performance or handling.

Budny was shot down twice over Vietnam and had more than his share of other near disasters from eminent control failure and bullet fire. Skip spoke about life in the crew quarters away from the front and the conditions when close to fire. Often they had to provide support for downed aircraft, which were nearly always recovered.

Once out of the military Budny pursued a career in commercial aviation, flying DC-3s for lake Central Airlines, then moving on to Nord 262 turboprops, Convair 580s, DC-9s, and eventually qualified to fly Boeing 757 and 767s.

During his civilian years he owned a former military Hiller helicopter for 18 years. His current project is a Mini 500 helicopter kit that is nearly completed. He divides his time between the Mini 500 and a restoration of an H-model Huey helicopter that saw service in Vietnam.

Skip Budny presented a fascinating program on what life was like in the war zone for a young pilot. Part two of his slide show had more than 150 slides. More than 40 years after his service he can still recall many fine details about each slide. Due to the program's rapid pace there were too many details to record for this story. For more information on Skip Budny's careers and his projects, see the November 2006 Chapter 1311 newsletter for the story on part one of the program, and the June 2007 newsletter for the story on this Mini 500 project.
