Year-End Wrap-Up

For the past five years we've closed our December edition with a "year-end wrap-up," where we highlight all of the events that have happened in the Chapter, in the regional flying community and in the general aviation world. This edition we offer the following synopsis of Chapter 1311's great year. Enjoy!

January 2008
From the Chapter President:
Gus writes about flights on New Year's Day and the first Tool Scholarship recipient.

January's meeting: Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by Chapter President Dale Gustafson, with 16 members and 4 guests. Treasurer's report: The chapter closed out the first tool fund with a net chapter expense of zero. Secretary's report: The Board of Directors discussion: report on the financing of the tool scholarship fund, setting dues for 2008, future direction of the newsletter, and on-going community outreach projects for the chapter. Vice President's report: Report on Christmas Party. President's Remarks: Chapter service awards presented. New Business: Hats available for $12 Upcoming Trip: The HCAA is planning a bus trip to the USAF Museum in April. Program: Clayton Eckert and Chad Suverkrup of Fast Track Flight brought an Evektor SportStar aircraft and talked about Sport Pilot training.

Dues are Due: $15 dues are announced for 2008.

February 2008

Gus writes about cost hampering the process in general aviation,

February's meeting: Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport. Chaired by Chapter President Dale Gustafson, with 20 members and four guests in attendance. Treasurer's report: None given. Secretary's report: Michael Mossman gave a report on the previous meeting. Vice President's report: Doug Moncreiff and Dennis Crawley will be working on the 2008 program schedule. President's Remarks: Dale Gustafson expects airports will get further restrictions on access. The EAA has a new and improved events calendar that will be available on-line. The dates for AirVenture 2008 are now set at July 28 through August 3. A new museum is planned for Cincinnati at the old Lunken Field. Builder's Roundtable: Advice offered on how to repair the intake tubes on a Lycoming oil pan. Buy/Sell/Trade: Fred Baldwin has a Sonex kit for sale. 50/50 Drawing: Not held. Program: What's New at Grov-Air.

New Members: Shaun Smith joined the chapter at the February meeting.

Rotax Amends Mandatory Magnetic Plug SB: The "Alert" status has been removed and the engine serial number list for affected engines has been reduced to a more defined range.

Aviation on TV: 'Inside Oshkosh" TV Special To Premiere February 22, and Red Bull Air Race to host one or two races in the Midwest, to be televised on Sunday evenings on Fox.

Columbus Airport News: Proposal for new control tower in development.

Indianapolis Airport News: Randall Tobias named as new airport authority president. New airport opening target date set for October 28.

EAA Young Eagles Update: By publication date more than 1,374,204 Young Eagles have flown.

Aircraft Spotter: A micro helicopter from France, with a link to the two-minute video.

March 2008

March's meeting: Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by Chapter Treasurer Vern Sullenger, with 16 members and 1 guest in attendance. Treasurer's report: Balance is $1,683.48, of which $75 is the tool fund Secretary's report: Michael Mossman gave a report on the February meeting. President's Report: Chapter President Gus Gustafson is in Florida trying to sell their property. Young Eagles Report: Vern Sullenger reports that Young Eagles pilots get a credit for each youth flown, and the credits can be redeemed for sponsoring a kid to the EAA academy. Tool Scholarship Report: The second set of tools is now being accumulated. 50/50 Drawing: Dave Clark won $11.50. Program: Steve Lathrop's race car fabrication shop and Bearhawk project.

New Members: Ernie Winters joined at the March meeting.

Indy Air Show Needs Volunteers: Colonel Bill Hamerstadt is recruiting volunteers.

Hendricks County Airport News: Instrument approach will be available June 5; new sign for US 36 planned; AWOS planned; grass runway due to open in about a year.

Boone County Airport News: Kevin Beach, who has a Cessna 310, joined the club in March. Wayne Deckard bought a Navion project in Georgia and brought it to the airport for a restoration.

April's meeting: April 2, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by chapter President Dale Gustafson with 18 members and 3 guests in attendance. Treasurer's report: Not given. Secretary's report: Michael Mossman gave a report on the March meeting meeting. President's Report: Gus Gustafson talks about recent aviation accidents in Florida. Tool Scholarship Report: 27 of the 57 required items are now acquired. 50/50 Drawing: Not held. Program: Steve Kopeschka showed his Little Wing Autogyro project.

Project Update: Skip Budny reports that the H-model Huey helicopter that the Indiana Air Search & Rescue is restoring will be ready for flight by mid-summer.

Ask Your Tech Counselor: FAA issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive number 2008-06-51 to owners of aircraft equipment with Lycoming Engines, Teledyne Continental Motors and Superior Air Parts engines equipment with some models of Precision Airmotive fuel injection servos.

ATA Calls It Quits: Indianapolis-bases airline ATA Airlines discontinued all flights on Thursday, April 3, re-entering bankruptcy for what appears to its final exit from the airline market.

Aviation on TV: PBS will be begin airing a 10-part series entitled "Carrier," which is a documentary about life on the aircraft carrier Nimitz.

AOPA Safety Seminar at Purdue in April: "Top 5 Mistakes Pilots Make," will be held on Wednesday, April 23 on the Purdue campus.

Boone County Airport News: Vern Samuels bought Richard Dawes' Piper Cherokee 140/160. Rodney Davis bought a WW-II Stinson L-5 and brought to the field.

May's meeting: Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by chapter President Dale Gustafson, with 20 members and 3 guests in attendance. Treasurer's report: $1,697.22 plus $50 in meeting receipts to deposit. Tool fund is a negative $31.26 before 50/50 drawing. Secretary's report: Michael Mossman gave a report on the May meeting meeting. President's Report: Gus Gustafson says that he is now officially out of Florida. Vice President's Report: Doug Moncreiff missed the last meeting due to illness and is glad to be back. Young Eagles Report: Vern Sullenger reports that Young Eagles credits need to be used by August 30. General Business: Glen Matejcek says that he has a couple gallons of alodine available. Mike Laurenzano says that FAA is moving their operations to Plainfield. Ernie Winters reports that the Ford Tri-motor will be a Greencastle on June 13. Dave Clark talked about recent survey about gas influencing fly-ins; many pilots plan to skip the local events but will save up for Oshkosh. Tool Scholarship Report: 26 of the 57 required tools for a new set. Buy/Sell/Trade: Fred Baldwin is selling his Sonex kit. Ford Tri-Motor Returns to Indiana: Tin Goose due in Terre Haute Hulman Field and Greencastle.

ADs for Amateur Built Aircraft: Glen Matejcek writes about complying with ADs for homebuilt aircraft.

Chapter Fly-Out Breakfast Planned: First fly-out breakfast will be on Saturday, June 14 at Pam's Place (78I).

Aviation on the Web: A research company from Indiana that claims to have developed a new 100LL aviation fuel replacement that is synthesized from biomass materials.

New Endorsements Required: Pilot flying out of the United States will be required to have an "English Language Proficient" endorsement on their certificate.

Boone County Airport News: Gary Baum brought a Cessna 150 to the field. Tom Rich brought a Piper Warrior to the field. Kristen Henke bought a Maule MX-7. The volunteer members tore down an old shed and built a new shelter for the property maintenance equipment.

Hendricks County Airport: The instrument approach will be available on June 5. The Master Plan for airport is in final stages. FAA overestimated number of jets expected in the next 10-20 years, revised it downward. An AWOS system will be installed.

Westfield Airport News: Wes Wheeler, owner of Wheeler Airport, died on March 21 in Texas.

June's meeting: Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by chapter President Dale Gustafson, with 16 members and 1 guest in attendance. Treasurer's Report: $1,818.22, plus proceeds from 50/50 to deposit. Tool fund has $14.74 plus the 50/50 proceeds. Secretary's Report: Michael Mossman read the minutes from the May meeting. President's Report: Gus Gustafson took issue with an article in General Aviation News about self-certification of medical status as a sport pilot. Young Eagles Report: Three pilots flew some Young Eagles on May 17. New Business: Mark Eminger announced the plans and procedures for the fly-out breakfast at Pam's Place. General Business: Dave Clark led a discussion about the proposal to change the name of Indianapolis International Airport back to Weir Cook. Buy/Sell/Trade: Glen Matejcek has 1,000 CO2 cylinders available for life jackets. 50/50 Drawing: David Stucker won $14 and donated his winnings to the tool fund. Program: Don Roberts, from EAA Chapter 67, spoke about his life and the conditions on the aircraft carrier "Essex."

President's Report: Gus Gustafson led a discussion on compensating presenters for expenses. 50/50 Drawing: No drawing was held, but members contributed to the tool fund. September 2008
From the Chapter President:
Gus Gustafson writes about the EPA cracking down on washing airplanes.

September's meeting: Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by Chapter President Dale Gustafson with 14 members and 2 guests. Treasurer's Report: $1,777.22 in the account, of which $41 is for the tool fund, plus $15 and $10 rebate from Tom Poberezny, plus another $75 cash for the tool fund. Secretary's Report: Michael Mossman read the minutes from the August meeting. President's Report: Dennis Crawley is working out of state and will be not able to attend any meetings so he has resigned from the board. He is also looking for a partner in his Grumman aircraft. Gus is recommending that we have only five directors the next election rather than seven. New election committee forming, which will consist of Glen Matejcek, Michael Mossman and Paul Vogel. Vice President's Report: Chapter hats for sale. New Business: Chapter voted to give a hat to meeting presenters. Young Eagles Report: None given. 50/50 Drawing: Not held but a collection for the tool fund was conducted Program: Oshkosh Debriefing.

President's Remarks: Dale Gustafson: Dennis Crawley has resigned from the board. Coming events: Victory Days at Terre Haute, which will be WW-II re-enactments. Treasurer's Report: Vern Sullenger: $1,676.92 in checking account, tool box now paid. EAA hats for sale at $12. Secretary's Report: Michael Mossman read the minutes from the September meeting. Vice President's Report: Doug Moncreiff: Chapter Christmas Party LA Café Wednesday Dec 3-10. Tool Kit Report: Gary Reynolds showed the completed second tool kit at the meeting. Other Business: Mike Laurenzano reported that the FAA News is a magazine that is out on a monthly basis. 50/50: David Parker won $20 on 50/50. Safety Tip: John Broyles reported that dragging fuel nozzles across the grass could contaminate fuel. Program: David Parker reported on aviation history in Indiana.

Gus Gustafson writes about fall weather, his planned last year as chapter president and the new Indianapolis International terminal.

November's meeting: Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Hendricks County Airport, chaired by Chapter President Dale Gustafson with 17 members and 4 guests. President's Remark The January meeting will have a board of directors meeting prior to the regular meeting. Next year will his fifth and last year as president. Treasurer's Report: Vern Sullenger reports that we have $1,658.32 in the account plus $89,25 for calendars and 50/50 proceeds Newsletter Report: Michael Mossman says that now that the fly-in season is over we will want to focus more on projects, building tips and ideas for the winter's newsletter stories. Upcoming programs: Skip Budny will be interested in finishing his Vietnam story with a program in January. Vice President's report: Doug Moncreiff is working on the landing gear and learning about sheet metal on his Hi-Max project. Election News: Michael Mossman read the results of the chapter election. Other Business: The chapter has a limited-supply of EAA calendars for sale at $10 each. 50/50: Kim Shumaker won half of the $41 pot. Rick Princell Injured in Crash: Chapter member Rick Princell crashed an ultralight on Nov. 2 and was transported to Methodist Hospital.
