Aviation Humor
1. No flight ever leaves on time unless you are running late and need the delay to make the flight.
2. If you are running late for a flight, it will depart from the farthest gate within the terminal.
3. If you arrive very early for a flight, it inevitably will be delayed.
4. Flights never leave from Gate #1 at any terminal in the world.
5. If you must work on your flight, you will experience turbulence as soon as you touch pen to paper.
6. If you are assigned a middle seat, you can determine who has the seats on the aisle and the window while you are still in the boarding area. Just look for the two largest passengers.
7. Only passengers seated in window seats ever have to get up to go to the lavatory.
8. The crying baby on board your flight is always seated next to you.
9. The best-looking woman on your flight is never seated next to you.
10. The less carry-on luggage space available on an aircraft, the more carry-on luggage passengers will bring aboard.

October's Program
Just 11 years later on August 17, 1859, aviation came to Indiana, which was the site of the first U.S. Postal air freight. 123 letters and 23 circulars were carried in a balloon flown by John Wise of Lancaster PA, in a flight sponsored by the U.S. Post Office. The balloon landed in Crawfordsville then the letters were taken by train to New York. Parker claims that those letters are now worth six figures each. Seven years after that first mail flight Indiana got its own resident balloonist, John H. Pierre, from Indianapolis.
Parker noted that 100 years later a group re-created that first airmail flight in 1959, with the U.S. Postal Service issuing some commemorative stamps. They are planning another recreation in 2009, which will be the 150th anniversary.
From that point on, Indiana figured prominently in the advance of aviation with many major and minor figures:
In 1883, Albert Zahm, a Notre Dame teacher, collaborated with Samuel Langley of the Smithsonian. Zahm was the secretary of the International Conference of Aerial Navigation at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Zahm was chief of the Aeronautical Division of the Library of Congress until 1945. He lived long enough to see aviation thrive.
In 1892 on the northeast side of Indianapolis, the Brightwood Aerial Navigation Company met in secret and built one aircraft that crashed and burned. The company burned their plans and disbanded.
In 1896, Octave Chanute, a bridge builder and civil engineer with a phenomenal résumé, flew 359 feet in 14 seconds at the Indiana Dunes, which was the first sustained manned flight project. Later, The Wrights corresponded extensively with Chanute for his notes and theories on heavier-than-air flight.
Co-inventor of the first powered airplane Wilbur Wright was born in Milville IN in 1867. Wilbur and Orville both attended school in Richmond.
Lawrence & Grover Bell of Bell Aircraft used the Indianapolis-built Allison V-12 engine in their Bell P-39.
Art Smith, who was only 15 when he began construction of his first aircraft, died on an airmail flight in 1926. A replica of his first aircraft is on display at Fort Wayne Airport. Smith Field at Fort Wayne (SMD) is named after him.
In 1912 Airmail flight began in earnest. Indiana resident Paul Baer died flying mail in China.
In 1930, during the Golden Age of Aviation, Ellen Church of Terre Haute, single, 25-year-old registered nurse, no taller than 5'4". She was a pilot and applied to become an airline pilot but was turned down because she was a woman. Since she was a registered nurse she lobbied for an opportunity to be a flight attendant and became one of the first eight female flight attendants.
In 1928, Edwin Link, who was born in Huntington, IN, built the Link Trainer flight simulator. Thousands of these machines were built for training in the following years.
1922 SATTCO Transports, based in Wabash IN, converted WW-I DeHavilland bombers to civilian-carrying transport aircraft.
Famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart taught classes at Purdue University and had been sponsored by Purdue. Purdue paid for her last aircraft, the Lockheed Electra that she and Fred Noonan flew when they disappeared somewhere in the Pacific Ocean in 1937.
Aviator Wiley Post once made an emergency landing at Purdue University. He got his picture taken with the Purdue president by the news media. He then used the photo to "prove" that he went to a university.
Famed air racing pilot Roscoe Turner settled in Indianapolis and owned a Beechcraft dealership. He formed Turner Air, which later became Signature Air.
During WW-II P-47s were made in Evansville IN, while Allison Engines were made in Indianapolis.
At Madison IN, a facility was established from which WW-II aircraft flew, although not officially an Army Air Force base.
Applegate-Weyant, a company in Elkhart IN, bought the rights to the Culver Cadet and built about 10 Applegate-Weyant aircraft before ceasing production.
Later, in the mid 1980s, Sun Ray built about four or five prototype airplanes intended for border patrol.

Go back to Section 1
We've all been around town trying to scrounge up a few AN bolts or perhaps some 4130 tubing to finish a last-minute weekend building or repair project. How much easier would it be to know where the best supplies of quality parts and materials are?
Start thinking of the places where you locally buy for AN hardware, sheet metal, paint, tools and other items. We'll need an address, phone number and web site, if they have one. Be sure to let us know if you would recommend them to others or not. The idea here is that members should be able to look to suppliers that you trust and would continue to do business with. Please forward your ideas and recommendations to Michael Mossman at michaelandkatie1@comcast.net
With a successful first tool set completed and loaned, Chapter 1311 has now fully funded the second Eric Gustafson Tool Scholarship. The intent is to aid a financially stressed person get a start on the basic tools needed for the required courses while pursuing the A & P license.
The chapter has accumulated a second starting set of tools for a worthy Vincennes University A&P student. The basic tools to start with may be new or used but serviceable (not junk) and be contributed to the chapter. Just about every person involved in aviation ends up with surplus tools and equipment as time moves on and they no longer have a use for them.
New Ratings: Charles Westerfield has completed all of the flight requirements for a Light Sport Pilot license and only has to take the flight test and oral exam.
EAA Young Eagles Update: By newsletter publication date more than 1,422,125 Young Eagles have taken their first airplane ride.
Chapter 1311 will try to list the aviation-related events in Indiana and surrounding states, plus the major events across the country. Do you know of an event that isn't listed? Please inform the newsletter editor to get it included.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 6:30 p.m., at Hendricks County Airport. Chapter elections will be conducted at this meeting. Program: Russ Ryle from Bloomington will talk about Indiana's Ghost Airports.
Take U.S. 36 (Rockville Road) west past Avon.
Turn left (south) on CR 300 E (84 Lumber is on the SW) corner of the intersection.
At about 1/2 mile turn right (west) into the airport.

By Michael Mossman
Chapter 1311 member David Parker, who was born in Indiana and lived in Lafayette area until earning with an A&P license and began working as AAR, has had a life-long interest in Indiana aviation and has started filming a documentary on Indiana aviation. In his research for filmable facts, he has started collecting memorabilia and artifacts for film.
Parker noted that Indiana aviation started more than 150 years ago. He opened with a quote from "The Powers and Possibilities of the Human Mind" by Carleton M. Shipley, a prominent Muncie lawyer, politician and businessman, August 31, 1848: "May we not reasonably predict
in the imitation of birds of the air we will journey by the aid of artificial wings?"
In 1875, John Anthony, a Martin County farmer, built a glider with wooden wings. In 1881 he built a more conventional glider that was mildly successful.
During WW-I Indiana resident Harvey Weir Cook flew with Captain Eddie Rickenbacker in the 94th Pursuit Squadron. Cook died in WW-II. Indianapolis International Airport was originally named Weir Cook Airport. The new airport terminal is now named after Cook.
Aviation Organizations Headquartered in Indiana:
Parker has started a great knowledge base on Indiana aviation history and had much more material than could be presented in a short meeting program. If you have some items that may be used in his documentary, he is welcoming contributions. I look forward to viewing this film.
