Membership Roster Updates Needed
July's Program
Gus Gustafson said that Aluminum Overcast to be at Mt Comfort July 17-20, needs PR; warbird squad not promoting it yet. It will also be at Terre Haute on July 14 and 15; the chapter there will be looking for help.
Gary Reynolds helped with Aluminum Overcast it in 1987 and got to ride in the co-pilots seat. He says that they don't allow non-type-rated pilots in the right seat anymore. Gus says that FAA has restrictions on who can crew it in the air. You you want to ride in it you should book it early on the EAA website. EAA members can get a discount on the price of the ride.
Dave Clark is at Oshkosh right now getting ready for AirVenture 2008.
Gus Gustafson mentioned a while a young fellow at Sheridan was trying to get his instrument rating an FAA guy was taking pride in how many people they can bust. Only 13% of applicants pass on the first time they take the test. The kid got the oral portion of the test done that day but could not get through the flight portion. Now takes all day for oral and flight check.
Glen Matejcek says that you can no longer go through a flight examiner for a CFI; you must use FAA. Gus commented that it's no wonder we have trouble getting people to want to learn to fly.
Gus says that from when he ran Boone County Airport, the examiners used to say they could tell within first five minutes if a guy would pass or not.
Dick with the HCA says that he has been using a designated examiner for 23 years; the guy needs two weeks notice to do an exam. The examination takes 5-6 hours for private certificate, with the flight lasting about 2.5 hours. Is thorough, doesn't give it away. Dick uses Harold Summers, who used to be chief instructor at Aretz Airport Dick claims that Summers is thorough and doesn't "give it away."
Gary Reynolds commented that when he got instrument rating had to go to Tell City. Reynolds heard that examiner was a stickler for details so he was ready. Gary says that the examiner found out he was 0.7 hours short of the requirements so he would not do exam. Gary had to go home and come back later.
Glen Matejcek mentioned that when he did ATP multi-engine test in Memphis, the FAA examiner when through his log books one page at a time. When she found out that he flew into Oshkosh, she said she and her daughter went there all of the time and then passed him easily.
Visitor Rick Metz said that he came to meeting about six months ago, and is now going to Oshkosh with son. Metz wants to build 2-seat sport plane. He claims to have no pre-conceived ideas about what he wants, what materials to use, etc. Without a permanent airport home, he says that he wants folding or removable wings, leading to a discussion on how to select and aircraft project.
Michael Mossman mentioned that Metz should build a matrix with various aircraft with their specs and features, then use it to help refine his list of prospects. Mossman recommended that he come up with a list of "must have" and "deal breakers" to help narrow the list.
Ernie Winters commented on knowing a guy who built a Zenair, and the wings folded in flight.
Glen Matejcek and Doug Moncreiff both heartily recommended shopping at Oshkosh. It's a great place to look at completed aircraft and also the best place to get a deal on components. Sometimes a dealer will offer to write a mail order to save Wisconsin sales tax.

By Michael Mossman
Because our intended program presenter, Denny Smith, had to cancel at the last moment due to a family emergency, Gus Gustafson led a general aviation discussion.
Visitor David Parker, who has been to a few meetings over the past couple of years, attended Vincennes University and just got A&P license, is now working at AAR.
My favorite time of the year has arrived Fly-In season! If you have an aircraft and are looking for places to go, we've got some great locations and events. The following is a list of fly-ins and other aviation events located in Indiana and adjacent states. If you don't have an aircraft but are willing to drive, the list below is round-trip "do-able" in a day. We can't guarantee that every fly-in is listed. Also, we strongly recommend that you contact the event before committing your 100LL. However, we guarantee that if you visit some of these you'll have some great fun.
