Chapter Begins Second Tool Scholarship
With a successful first tool set completed and loaned, Chapter 1311 is now starting the funding for a second Eric Gustafson Tool Scholarship. The intent is to aid a financially stressed person get a start on the basic tools needed for the required courses while pursuing the A & P license.

The chapter will need to accumulate a second starting set of tools for a worthy Vincennes University A&P student. The basic tools to start with may be new or used but serviceable (not junk) and be contributed to the chapter. Just about every person involved in aviation ends up with surplus tools and equipment as time moves on and they no longer have a use for them.

The chapter has already begun the funding process, with proceeds from the 50/50 drawing at the monthly meetings, plus some seeding donations from members. If you have some tools that you would like to donate or purchase for the tool scholarship, check download the list of needed tools from the web site. Because the list isn't updated as fast as tools could potentially come in, check with Gary Reynolds at 317-745-6223 or n98gr@att.net for the current status of the tool list.

See tool list.

Aircraft Spotter
On Saturday, April 19, three Blackhawk helicopters out flying maneuvers announced their intentions to travel through Boone County Airport's airspace. Chapter 1311 member Chuck Leucht got on the Unicom and invited them to come in for a touch-and-go. The aircraft landed for a few moments then departed to the north. A couple hours later they came back through Boone County Airport for touch-and-go's then departed to the south.

Quote of the Month
"As I look back, my participation in air shows has been a wonderful experience. When people ask what it's like to perform aerobatic maneuvers, I go back to the words I used to describe my first solo flight more than fifty years ago. Every time I fly, I experience another dimension of existence, no longer tied to the earth. I feel free — free of gravity, free of everything. It's the greatest feeling in the world." From Forever Flying, by Bob Hoover.

May's Program
By Michael Mossman

Retired commercial pilot Paul Vogel started building his Sonex kit in 2006, and has been making continual progress towards its completion.

Before starting the project, Vogel claims to have had "zero building experience," but since retirement he attended Vincennes University and earned an A&P certificate, giving him a head-start on aircraft construction know-how.

Before selecting the Sonex, Vogel looked at several others but picked the Sonex because of its simplicity: all-metal construction, used of pull-type (blind) rivets and the good support for builders. Vogel is 5'11" and claims to have plenty of headroom in the diminutive Sonex.

The Sonex is a two-seat, side-by-side tractor airplane, built from aluminum with a low-wing configuration. Although available as a taildragger, Vogel will be building his with a nosewheel. With its closely faired canopy and very streamlined fuselage, the speedy Sonex has no trouble getting to the speed limits of Light Sport Aircraft with low horsepower engines.

When we visited Vogel in July 2007, he estimated that we had completed about one-third of the airplane. The fuselage and wings were completed but not mated together. Over the past year he's installed the landing gear, controls and mated the wings to the fuselage, although the wings were removed while the aircraft was shown at his home. He estimates that the airplane is now about 50% completed.

The Sonex was designed to fly behind the AeroVee Volkswagen engine conversion but Sonex also provides support for the Australian-built Jabiru 2200 and 3300 engines. Although Vogel is undecided on an engine, he already has a 78 h.p. 2100 cc Revmaster engine that was built for a Sonex and will fit on this engine mount. It was new and already on another experimental plane that was never completed. The AeroVee displaces 2180 cc; Paul isn't sure if the extra 80 cc's and 2 horsepower will make a significant difference in performance.

Vogel's Revmaster engine has a dual Bendix magneto; the AeroVee uses a flywheel type magneto. Both engine types are dual ignition and use a guillotine updraft-type of carburetor. There is no provision for a vacuum pump. Paul has a 54/46 wooden propeller but he is not committed to using it.

Vogel plans on minimal radios and instrumentation for his aircraft. He expects to have a nav/com radio, transponder and engine management gauges as needed but will depend on a hand-held GPS for his main VFR navigation. In keeping with his budgetary building philosophy, his paint scheme will involve some striping with polished aluminum for the rest of the external surfaces.

Vogel has kept a rough building log of the project and has taken some photos as he's gone along. He expects to re-copy the log before completion. He hasn't totaled his hours but has estimated that he's invested about 800 hours so far. Part of those 800 hours involved re-doing some parts, such as the vertical stabilizer and other minor parts that he wasn't happy with. Paul doesn't have a registration number yet, but his kit is number 971. He thinks that the factory is now selling kits in the 1200 range.

Vogel writes, "The building process has not been difficult, although I had made some mistakes and have had to buy some additional materials. At the moment I have excessive toe-in on one of the landing gear legs. I'm not sure how to correct that and may have to buy an additional part that costs in the $50 range."

He adds, "The plans are very good. I have found a few minor mistakes and their support is very good if you don't mind asking stupid questions. After you learn what you needed, you realize you should have understood what the plans called for. For me, it works best to email Sonex and they usually respond within an hour. They also have technical help by phone but the line is very busy."

Once Vogel's Sonex is completed, he'll be operating it in the Light Sport category and expects to do mostly cross country flying. He doesn't have any trips planned but he will probably visit family in other states.

For more information on Paul Vogel's Sonex, see the program story in the July 2007 newsletter http://www.eaa1311.org/newslettersweb/070701_newsletter3.html.
