Section 1

From the Chapter President
By Dale "Gus" Gustafson

I'll go easy on everyone and keep it short as we all have plenty to do. First, I want to thank Doug Moncreiff and his wife Suzy for hosing the chapter's annual Christmas Party. For the ones attending, all had a very good time. The food and service were excellent and the prices very reasonable. At each place setting there was a keepsake snowflake ornament to take home for your tree. A very nice touch from Suzy. Thank you.

I know that some of our chapter members receive Sport Pilot magazine, edited by Mary Jones. In the November 2007 issues on the last page (64) is her editorial titled "A Speck of Sand." It is worth you time to read it. I'll have extra copies at the next chapter meting to pass out for any interested persons.

Doug has a really nice program set for our January 2008 meeting. It will be about sport pilot and promises to be interesting. We will be at the Hendricks County Airport again — our regular meeting place. Let's all be safe during this holiday season and have a Merry Christmas followed by a Happy New Year.

Gus

Letter from Our EAA Founder
November 30, 2007

When I read through the history of your EAA, living every day for half a century plus, I truly know how time flies.

I want to share with you some of the thoughts of our members as they appeared in our Sport Aviation magazine back in 1963. The organization of dreamers, homebuilders and fellow aviation supporters building/designing their aircraft under the CAA/FAA 51% rule we worked so diligently for and earned is something to be treasured. One can build his or her airplane for educational and recreational purposes and friends can work with you for their own educational value. Really, we can build one half of it — the other half, such as engines, propellers, wheels, brakes, instruments, radios, items not normally within the capabilities of those who work with hand and mind can be purchased. Now we are faced with a situation of the FAA amateur building program being used for commercial purposes — from building complete aircraft or well over the half mark … not within the intent of the program given to us by those CAA/FAA folks who believed in us. Let's hope we don't lose this privilege.

Sincerely,

EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION

Paul H. Poberezny
Founder and Chairman of the Board

Dirk Melchior is "Famous"
Chapter 1311's Dirk Melchior, who is Chautauqua Airlines Manager of Flights Standards, was recently quoted in AOPA's Air Safety Foundation's Runway Safety online course. According to the report, Regional carrier Chautauqua Airlines, a subsidiary of Indianapolis-based Republic Airways, reportedly is requiring all of its pilots to complete the course. "There's really nothing better out there; it's certainly better than what we could have put together in-house," Melchior is quoted as saying.

Chapter 1311 Builders' Local Resource Directory
We've all been around town trying to scrounge up a few AN bolts or perhaps some 4130 tubing to finish a last-minute weekend building or repair project. How much easier would it be to know where the best supplies of quality parts and materials are?

AED Motorsport Products, 5375 W. 86th St., Indianapolis IN 46268, 317-334-0569 http://www.aedmotorsport.com. AED specializes in 4130 chrome moly, stainless, aluminum, titanium, FK rod ends and spherical bearings.

Chance Aviation, 4444 Decatur Blvd , Indianapolis, IN 46241, 317-486-8802, http://www.chanceaviation.com. Chance is a parts supplier tailored to the local FBO's,

Earl's Indy, 302 Gasoline Alley, Indianapolis IN 46222, 1-800-331-INDY http://www.earlsindy.com. Earl's specializes in hoses and related supplies and service, plus AN fittings and hardware.

McKinney Corp, Lafayette, IN http://www.mckinneycorp.com. They stock a wide variety of 4130 steel and 6061 aluminum tubing, AN hardware, NACA scoops, and other items

Start thinking of the places where you locally buy for AN hardware, sheet metal, paint, tools and other items. We'll need an address, phone number and web site, if they have one. Be sure to let us know if you would recommend them to others or not. The idea here is that members should be able to look to suppliers that you trust and would continue to do business with. Please forward your ideas and recommendations to Michael Mossman at michaelandkatie@insightbb.com.

Check out our online directory at http://www.eaa1311.org. Click on the link "Homebuilder's Resources" on the left. Note that all resources listed are merely suggestions; as a chapter we do not endorse any of them. Our recommendation: "Caveat Emptor" (let the buyer beware).

Aviation on the Web
Bob Braaf submits this nomination for Aviation on the Web, a site called Over the Airwaves, which a web site dedicated to promoting aviation safety. Over the Airwaves has links for pre-flight briefings, instrument approach plates, airport information, fuel planning, DUATS, weather, past issues and other cool stuff. Check it out at http://overtheairwaves.com:80/

Cessna Skycatcher Stirs Up Controversy
From Avwebflash 13.48b:

Cessna has chosen the Chinese-government owned Shenyang Aircraft Corp. to build the Model 162 Skycatcher. Earlier this week, Cessna announced it would be building the Light Sport Aircraft offshore. In a news release, Cessna CEO Jack Pelton said the company needed top quality at a competitive price and SAC put it all together. "Our solution is to partner with SAC, a company with excellent facilities, state-of-the-art technologies and a workforce highly experienced in aircraft manufacturing. SkyCatcher customers will get an advanced design, high-quality workmanship and world-class product support, all at an affordable price from Cessna, a brand known and trusted worldwide." According to a story in the Wall Street Journal, building the Skycatcher in China knocks $71,000 off the price compared to building it in the U.S. The other issue is plant capacity. There is no room in Cessna's Wichita or Independence plants to turn out the 700 Skycatchers per year that Cessna envisions. The move, coupled with Cessna's acquisition of Columbia Aircraft has dominated Cessna's profile in recent months as it continues to pile up record sales for its business jets.

SAC is better known for its activities in jet aircraft and whether this is a foot in the door for future projects seems likely from the comments made by the head of SAC. "SAC greatly values the cooperation with Cessna, and sees Cessna as a significant partner in the general aviation segment. Since the start of the cooperation between the two companies that began in 2003, a good foundation has been established," said Chairman and President, Mr. Luo Yang of SAC. "The communications and exchange of visits between the management of our two companies have strengthened the trust and understanding, which leads to today's signing of the Model 162 contract, making SAC the sole source supplier of this great airplane." SAC has been building aircraft — mostly for the Chinese military — since 1951 and has entered into joint projects with a number of Western companies, including Boeing, Airbus and -Bombardier.

Our members respond: FYI: Nice to know we are doing business with "Alpha Hotels" who won't let our Navy ships into port to escape a storm at sea or just for Liberty for the crew etc. The acronym "SAC" is a nice one, SAC was USAF designation. Do you think the $71k will come off the original Cessna estimate of about $110k for the a/c ?? When pigs fly! — Larry Rush

It will probably be covered with lead based paint ... Maybe everyone will boycott this model, and all the "pre-orders" will demand their money back. We can hope! — Jim Snyder

Greetings From Nicaragua
Project Update:
Tim LeBaron thought that he might complete and fly his RV-4 restoration this past month, but he's been on the road with two accident investigations and a side trip to Nicaragua with Erika. He writes "I am oh so close to the first flight but have been too busy. " He's also headed up to Indianapolis this month to pick up his Breezy project and bring it back to Texas.

We're looking forward to hearing more about the RV-4's first flight report and the eventual progress on the Breezy in future editions of the newsletter.

Is your project finished and flying? Consider submitting a flight and performance report for the newsletter. Your experiences and insight will help other members who are building the same or similar model aircraft, and will positively influence others who may be contemplating an aircraft project. If you aircraft has been flying for several years now, you might be making adjustments, modifications, or undertaken some significant repairs? Any memorable flights? Share them with your fellow chapter members!
