Chapter Tool Scholarship in Full Swing
Gus bought a new, proper-sized toolbox to start of the set. Upon opening it he discovered that it was damaged so he's taken it back to be replaced.
Gus petitioned the EAA and received its "blessing" for the scholarship, pending a "hold harmless" clause for the scholarship. The full set of tools, which is required for the Vincennes University A & P license program, will be loaded to a deserving student. Since the chapter has successfully accumulated a full tool set, Gus would like to start a second set. Since the A & P program lasts two years, alternating the two sets would allow the chapter to assist one new student every year. Practically all that remains to be done is to select the worthy student.
Funding for the current future sets is coming from the 50/50 proceeds, member donations and proceeds from the auction of the donated toolbox. To see the toolbox, contact Gary Reynolds at 317-590-7059 or N98GR@aol.com. Minimum bid is $300. If you would like to make a donation to the fund, please send your check to the Vern Sullenger, chapter treasurer.

Aircraft Spotter
A Letter From Our Founder
Another year will soon be coming to a close. Some of you have served as Chapter President for a number of years, while some have only served a year or two. Quite possibly, you've learned more about people during that time than about airplanes.
While reading the thousands of Chapter newsletters over the years, including those published this year, aviation has been made richer be cause of you efforts in the Chapter. I liken them to an aviation "church" (over a thousand of them) not only in our fine country, internationally as well. As I've said so many times, EAA is an aeronautical, educational and social organization with high standards that have moved aviation forward in a manner no other organization has accomplished. It was some 50 years ago several years after the founding of EAA, when Ray Stits of Riverside, California, contacted me regarding the forming of an EAA chapter. We though it was a good idea and, as the chapter program grew, they endured organizational challenges but continued to grow with excellent facilities and membership at Riverside.
I enjoy the chapter president editorials featured in the newsletters, the leadership shown and, at times, the frustrations and ability to overcome them. The quality of information in the newsletters is a clear reflection on the dedication and work of the fine newsletter editors and writers who submit the material. E-mail seems to be a growing fad at least to me. I guess I'm still I the old school of years past as this message is being written with pencil and paper
but more modern technology will take it from here.
Your organization started way back January 26, 1953. It seems like it was yesterday when in November of 1952 I asked my wife, Audrey, to send out postcards to a small group of fellows who I thought may be interested in the forming of a local (Milwaukee) airplane builders club. They showed up that wintry January night in a snowstorm for a meeting in the dope and fabric shop at Curtiss Wright Airport (now Timmerman Field).
Living EAA every day since the years 1952, watching it grow and witnessing how it has changed lives "for the better" as we have so often been told by our members. The chapter network has played an important role in this endeavor.
Please give your chapter members our regards and a special thank you to your newsletter editor for putting those 26 letters of the alphabet into valuable news and building the togetherness we enjoy.
Sincerely,
P.S. Some members have written to me about the high cost of the light sport aircraft. Of course we can't do much about free enterprise or their cost. Maybe someone will come up with a low cost, plans built or even a kit to meet the challenge (such as Sonex Aircraft here in Oshkosh). Some of you may remember the EAA Design Contest of years ago won by Peter Bowers with the Fly Baby creative thinking???

Gus Gustafson's new project, the Eric Gustafson Tool Scholarship, is now nearly complete. The chapter started with a donated Snap-On toolbox that's too big for the aviation program. The chapter will auction the toolbox, with the proceeds to help pay for the rest of the tools. Several chapter members have donated some tools. With the chapter's blessing, Gary Reynolds bought the rest of the tools, many at significant discount.
Glen Matejcek writes about an EAA acquaintance who is looking for World War One engines and airframes or replicas. Rick Lassetter, from Cleveland GA, is helping Jerry Yagen with some projects and needs any of the following engines: Hispano-Suiza, Mercedes, Hall-Scott, Liberty, OX-5, Siemens-Halske, Oberursel, Clerget, LeRhone, Gnome, other rotaries, etc. Check out their projects at http://www.fighterfactory.com.
EAA Chapter 1311 now has its nametags for the meetings. Our tags are a lanyard-style of tag, so there is no clip to mar the fine fabric of your clothing.
We've all been around town trying to scrounge up a few AN bolts or perhaps some 4130 tubing to finish a last-minute weekend building or repair project. How much easier would it be to know where the best supplies of quality parts and materials are?
That fly-in time of year has arrived! If you have an aircraft and are looking for places to go, we've got some great locations and events. The following is a comprehensive list of fly-ins and other aviation events located in Indiana and adjacent states. If you don't have an aircraft but are willing to drive, the list below is round-trip "do-able" in a day. We can't guarantee that every fly-in is listed. Also, we strongly recommend that you contact the event before committing your 100LL. However, we guarantee that if you visit some of these you'll have some great fun.
Be sure let the newsletter editor know if any of our members or their families has someone in the service, especially if they have been called up for active duty. We'd like to recognize them and thank them for representing us so honorably.
EAA Chapter 1311's newsletter is published by email notice on the 15th of each month, with a PDF version available on the chapter web site around the 20th. Newsletter contributors: Please email your material to the newsletter editor by the 14th of the month.
If you changed your email address or internet service provider, please be sure to let the newsletter editor know of the new address. If you know of a chapter member who's changed their email address or is no longer getting the newsletter, please let us know. Contact the newsletter editor at michaelandkatie@insightbb.com

The Young Eagles flights went greaton Saturday, October 6! We provided 9 young people with airplane rides. The group consisted of mostly 10-year-old cub scouts with one 17-year-old cub scout leader. The weather was beautiful, and the parents were also very enthusiastic. We had a nice question and answer session at the beginning, which was quite helpful. Sometimes the parents are relieved that their kid is not the first one we've ever taken for a ride. We explained that the program has been around for over 10 years and that most of our group has taken 100+ kids for rides. Susan Zellers & Jim Snyder provided rides in their Cherokee 180's. Gary Reynolds and I provided rides in our experimentals. Dave Clark handled the ground coordination.
If you have an opinion on any story that appears in the newsletter, or any other aviation-related issue, we want to read about it. We will make editorial space available for your responsible comment. Please contact the newsletter editor at 1-765-483-9533 or send it as an email to michaelandkatie@insightbb.com.
Chapter 1311 will try to list the aviation-related events in Indiana and surrounding states, plus the major events across the country. Do you know of an event that isn't listed? Please inform the newsletter editor to get it included.

It's conventional glider features include an extremely slick composite fuselage, high aspect ratio wings, T-tail and retracting spoilers on top of the wing. Unknown is who owns it and who flew it that day. For more information on the Sinus, see http://www.mcp.com.au/pipistrel-usa/
