Monthly Newsletter — September 2007

Section 2

September 2007 newsletter continued from Section 1

Project Updates
Let's get some updates on chapter members' projects. With just a bit more than 50 members, we list about 48 projects. Although many of these are flying, most are in various stages of build or rebuild. Let's get a story and photos about them in the upcoming editions of the newsletter.

Is your project finished and flying? Consider submitting a flight and performance report for the newsletter. Your experiences and insight will help other members who are building the same or similar model aircraft, and will positively influence others who may be contemplating an aircraft project. If you aircraft has been flying for several years now, you might be making adjustments, modifications, or undertaken some significant repairs? Any memorable flights? Share them with your fellow chapter members!

Download a Microsoft Word copy of the Project Questionnaire at http://www.eaa1311.org/PDF_files/Project_Questionnaire.doc

Aircraft Spotter
Somewhere in between the scale of "Man, that's cool" and "Just plain nuts" is this amazing strap-on personal aircraft. It features folding wings and four small turbojet or rocket engines. Other photos show the "pilot" folding the wings and deploying a parachute for landing. (Kids: do not try this at home … or anywhere else.) Supposedly, there are videos floating around on the internet showing this aircraft and pilot in the air; armchair thrill-seekers might search on youtube.com to see it on tape. If you uncover any statistics or other information on this aircraft, its builder, designer, pilot or obituary notices, let us know for inclusion in a future chapter newsletter.

Aviation Humor
Airplane crashes aren't humorous but this one comes close. On September 10 a Cessna 177 Cardinal crash landed on the roof of a storage warehouse shortly after taking off from Columbia Owens Airport in Columbia SC. The pilot and two passengers, who were the aircraft owners, suffered bruises and cuts; one passenger also broke her wrist.

According to a newspaper report, the aircraft experienced engine trouble after taking off. It hit a power line, which acted similar to an aircraft carrier arresting cable, and the Cardinal plunked right on the "approach" end of the warehouse. Not so humorous was the fact that the airplane ripped a hole in the roof and leaked about 30 gallons of avgas into the warehouse.

In the past 10 years, three aircraft have come to grief landing on buildings along Commerce Drive near the airport; none of the crashes caused any fatalities.
