Hendricks County Airport News
Hendricks County Aviation Association is hosting a fly-in luncheon on Saturday, August 18 from11-2. Details pending.

Boone County Airport News
Aircraft Sold:
Recently-minted private pilot Gary Rogers sold his T-Bird ultralight "Old Moldy" late in July to an undisclosed buyer. Old Moldy, a taildragger ultralight, was named after the mildewed Dacron on the wings and tail.

Aircraft Restoration: Wayne Deckard is in the final stages of restoration of the Navion that he and his uncle rescued from a field in Magnolia AR about five years ago. Deckard painted the Navion with a military scheme and has successfully flown it several times.

Hangar Space: There are several hangar vacancies available. Anyone desiring to base an aircraft at the airport or use the maintenance hangar will be required to join the association. For more information contact Michael Mossman, association secretary, or see the website http://www.booneairport.org.

Sheridan Airport News
The Hamilton County Council voted 4-3 authorizing the Hamilton County Aviation Authority to start negotiations to buy the airport. In 2003, Hamilton County bought Terry Airport (now Indianapolis Executive Airport) for $4.6 million. Sheridan Airport, which is owned by the Biddle family of Sheridan, houses 38 aircraft, and is mostly used by private airplanes.

County Council President Brad Beaver said it would likely be 60 to 90 days before a preliminary agreement could be reached between the Aviation Authority and the Biddle family, who owns the airport. If the deal is finalized, the county's ownership of the airport could help bring federal money to improve the airport, which always has been privately owned.

Some County Council members didn't think the county should own two airports. Council member Levine said she would like to see the county use its funds for needed repairs at Indianapolis Executive Airport, such as funding a master plan necessary to receive federal funding, before spending money on a second airport.

With the future of Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport — the only other airport located in Hamilton County — unknown, Beaver said he believes buying Sheridan Airport would be a wise investment.

Fishers is attempting to move Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport because it land would generate taxes for the town. Officials are considering moving the airport outside of Hamilton County to an area near Lapel in Madison County.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport is owned by the Indianapolis Airport Authority, which would have to approve any move.

Aviation Humor
Money can't buy happiness but it sure can buy a lot of house! Check out this palatial estate/terminal owned by John Travolta. Not only has he got two jets there (including his infamous Boeing 707), he's got a full-scale fuel truck in the lower right hand corner. Think it's expensive to feed your Lycoming? Imaging buying Jet A by the tankerload for your 707!

August's Program
By Michael Mossman

During August meeting program, Gus Gustafson led the chapter in a roundtable Oshkosh debriefing. We've asked our roundtable participants to expand on their meeting comments and offer those below:

Dave and Steve Kopeschka attended AirVenture at Oshkosh. On the way back home, they went to Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul IL. The base closed down in 1990, but still has exhibits.

Jim Lewis camped in the Homebuilt section by some guys from Jackson CA who flew in a Kitfox. Jim says that the pair (a father and son) had a tent so tiny that their feet stuck out the ends of the tent. After striking up a conversation with them, he learned that father was a rancher and a lawyer. The 6,000-acre ranch had been in their family since 1800. He became a lawyer to protect their interests.

Mark Eminger was watching the air show on Thursday and witnessed the remnants of the Mustang crash. From his vantage point, the Mustangs descended toward the runway, which he was unable to see the contact due to the crowd. He heard the impact and saw the smoke and knew that it was bad. According to Mark, one Mustang's propeller cut the stabilizer of the other Mustang and crashed upside down. The second Mustang (with the cut stabilizer), nosed over with its pilot able to get out. Gus Gustafson added that the Mustang that went upside down was an A-model homebuilt. Emergency vehicles were parked to block view of extrication. Tim LeBaron was doing duty in NTSB booth but don't know if he was involved in investigation since he works in a different region.

Gus Gustafson is the chairman of the Vintage Aircraft judging. Gus knew that a restored 1919 DeHavilland biplane was coming in from Creve Coeur MO, and they were anticipating its arrival. Unfortunately, the pilot and its Fairchild support plane and crew had multiple problems en route and had to make multiple stops to repairs and wait out the weather. After making their first stop they had to field fabricate a worm gear for the starter. They made stops at Mendoza and Poplar Grove. Gus tried to hold the judging open for this aircraft with guys sticking around past deadline, knowing that because of its age it was a contender for a prize. Finally determining that they were unable to bend the rules any more, the DeHavilland hadn't arrived yet and was unable to be judged. It was expected to be in at 1:10 on Friday but the judging had stopped at noon. Still not in, the field gave him a window to arrive by 2:15. The aircraft was losing water from radiator cap and landed again at Dodge County, Wisconsin, then finally made it to Oshkosh at 2:13 on Friday. If it arrived later than 2:15 they would have had to divert to another airport. Gus says that if it had made it in on time it would have been a grand champion. As a consolation prize they were able to give it a Judge's Choice award. The DeHavilland has a 12-cylinder Liberty engine. Although he was up late the night before (going over an airplane in the dark with a flashlight, explaining how an entrant didn't draw enough points to win a trophy, Gus got up very early to see the DeHavilland take off. Everyone was anticipating the sound of that Liberty engine but Gus was disappointed; He claims Liberty sounded like a worn-out threshing machine. On Sunday evening prior to show a highly-polished T-6 suffered a catastrophic engine failure and landed on north-bound lanes of US 41 very near Fond du Lac airport. The subsequent traffic tie-up delayed Gus getting to Oshkosh. The T-6 didn't have enough power to get to the airport so they had flown under power line and missed many road signs before landing on the road just before dark. The only airframe damage was a big ding in the wing. A father and son team were flying the airplane to Oshkosh. When the engine gave out the son was flying but father took over for the emergency landing. There were a couple of other aircraft with problems. A propeller came off of a Luscombe, but it landed without damage. Another homebuilt came to grief in a swamp. Some years Oshkosh has had a high quality of airplanes submitted for the judging; this year was not as high in Gus's opinion. Gus wore three hats at Oshkosh: one as chairman of Vintage judging, one as Chapter 1311 president and one representing Chapter 67.

Walt Fritz, a visitor from EAA Chapter 67 said that they had a formation of 35 RV airplanes for Van's Aircraft 35th anniversary. Jim Lewis said they had another formation of about 100.

Dave Clark left home early and arrived before the show to help open it. During the show he worked with Gus Gustafson judging the Vintage aircraft. Once AirVenture was closed to the public for the year, Dave stayed behind to help close down the grounds.

Michael Mossman planned on flying his Zenair to Oshkosh but bad weather across Indiana prevented VFR flight so he went up with Roy Dawes and camped in the bus. Roy brought a laptop computer and a printer, so on the way up he helped him make some flyers to try to sell his airplane and some parts. On Friday he stopped in at the NTSB booth and visited with Tim LeBaron, then made his rounds through the Fly Market and through the kit manufacturers' exhibits. He got a call from his sister-in-law's brother-in-law, who was there with a friend for his first "Oshkosh." They invited him to watch the air show with them. He was able to find them in the crowd, thanks to cell phones. On Friday evening Roy and Michael went out to dinner with Glen and Robin Matejcek and their friends from all over. On Saturday he went back to the Vintage section to see the De Havilland and walked through the Classics one more time. After Saturday's air show was over, Roy and Michael headed out in the bus. Once up to speed on US 41, Roy slid out and let Michael drive it. He got as far as the north side of Chicago then got it stuck in gear at an interstate oasis, trying to stop for fuel. Roy got it out of gear but couldn't get it started; the starter had failed. He got a trucker to pull start the bus with a semi truck and trailer. They got some food and headed towards Indiana (Roy wouldn't let Michael drive it anymore). "I liked camping in the homebuilt section last year, but taking the bus is absolutely the most comfortable way to 'do Oshkosh:' relax on the sofa en route, sleep on a soft bed way above the ground, no worry about tents leaking, take as much stuff as you want, 24-hour air conditioning, and an ice-cold beer when you get back from the air show. If only we'd had a few more people to split the fuel bill!"

What are your Oshkosh stories from 2007? Please share them with your fellow chapter members. Please send a report to Michael Mossman at michaelandkatie@insightbb.com.
