Movie Review: One Six Right
In our email invitation, Glen Matejcek wrote, "Fundamentally, it's about our dwindling GA airports and their impact. It involves some awesome cinematography of flight as well as history and perspectives of some notables involved in aviation." With my evening free and the tickets discounted to five dollars, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see it. So I headed over to the Keystone Art Theater on the northeast side of Indianapolis to see what turned out to be one of the best aviation movies that I have ever seen.
Before this special showing, Mike Elliott, who has a hangar at Eagle Creek Airport, gave his comments about the film then gave the introduction of Terwilliger.
Once, while visiting this buddy on the east coast, they went for a flight up the Hudson River and around the Statue of Liberty. Just one week later Terwilliger was taking flying lessons at Van Nuys Airport. When he finally got his license, he flew that same buddy 500 feet over the Golden Gate Bridge. What is that buddy doing now? Flying F-16s!
Terwilliger, who is now a filmmaker by trade, got the idea to document the passion and love of his hometown airport and share it with others. He wanted to "capture the spirit, history and passion of the field" He originally conceived the idea to film it in 8 mm, then the project started to evolve into what it is.
One Six Right is a movie that was five years in the making. Although he had some sponsorship and investors, his movie is truly independent; he allowed his investors no editorial or creative control and pandered to no sponsors. The result is an honest and fresh appraisal of his hometown airport.
Terwilliger spent many years knocking on doors, looking for investors. As expected, many people expressed an interest in the project but would not pony up. Others, such as actor Harrison Ford, never returned his calls and ducked him every time he approached. Regardless of these setbacks, he raised the funds to produce a first-rate film, financed partially by "The Bank of Mom and Dad."
Terwilliger sought the support of many of Van Nuys Airport's notables for background information, historical footage and on screen interviews. When the Airport Authority learned of his project, he was forbidden to shoot at the airport. Therefore, much of his early footage was shot behind closed hangar doors and with cameras and equipment smuggled onto the property. Later, the authority relented and assisted with the film.
The movie opens with a biplane and a Cub frolicking over the hilly countryside just a few miles from Van Nuys. Then it shows a man unlocking a hangar, exposing the front of a pretty Piper J-3 Cub. As the Cub gets rolled out of the hanger, the move cuts to a P-51 Mustang rolling out its hangar. Much of the movie showed how such divergent types, sizes and vintages of aircraft could all fly harmoniously from the same airport.
Featured early and often was notable aviation author Barry Schiff, who also claims Van Nuys has his home field. Schiff described the small propeller planes as "the foundation, the bedrock of all of aviation."
Phil Boyer, AOPA president, was also prominently featured with quotes about the influence and impact of general aviation on the local economies.
Some of the other prominent pilots based at Van Nuys who participated with on-screen interviews were movie director Syndey Pollack, who owns and flies a Cessna Citation X, actor Lorenzo Lamas, and movie director Tony Bill, who directed the currently-running aviation flick "Fly Boys."
Other video clips included interviews of Van Nuys-based based corporate pilots, business owners, war veterans, news helicopter pilots, presidents of local aviation associations and clubs, local news anchors, the son of the former airport owner, and the legendary Bob Hoover.
Before the movie was shown a short promo for Microsoft Flight Simulator played. Immediately thereafter, they segued into One Six Right. At first, I couldn't tell if they were showing more animation or actual movie footage; the clarity and details were that great. I few moments later, I realized that they were now showing camera-filmed scenes.
One Six Right features some of the most awesome and clear aerial photography you have ever seen. From the Cub flying low-and-slow over the rolling country side, to the Pitts tumbling through the air, a Cirrus VK-30 in cruise and a P-41 Mustang flying over head, it's a truly stunning representation of the varied aircraft actively flying from the world's busiest general aviation airport.
Some amazing aviation firsts were also highlighted:
Regardless of the historical and economic impacts Van Nuys has on the region and its esteemed place in aviation history, it faces the same problems of all other airports: land becoming more valuable for development, urban encroachment, complaints about noise and restrictive security measures. But Terwilliger's film isn't focused on problems or simply maintaining the field as a historical place. His motivation for making the movie is acutely obvious: his passion, and that of those around him, is clearly about aviation. One Six Right is about that passion; Van Nuys just happens to be the place where it happens for them.
One Six Right is a documentary, but it isn't a dry, brittle piece of dusty film destined for off-peak hours on PBS. While negotiating with the Discovery Channel for broadcast rights, Terwilliger is taking his film on the road, presenting it at selected theaters across the country, eventually ending up in Washington, where it will be played for members of congress.
Terwilliger commissioned original orchestral music by Nathan Wang and original guitar music by Freddy Clarke, plus incorporated some takes from period music for the historical film sequences. If you watch the movie once (you really can't just watch it once) then ever hear that music anywhere else, you will instantly recall the incredible aerial photography.
One Six Right is a "must see," no question. If you love aviation, you want to see it again and again. If you don't love aviation but love someone who does, you should see it. As Dennis Crawley said at the September meeting, one of the best things about the movie is that it helped his wife understand his passion for aviation. Mike Elliott recommended buying DVD copies of the movie to give to local governmental officials who may hold the purse strings for our airports.
If One Six Right is playing nearby, you should definitely go see it. If it's not playing in the area, get the DVD. It'll become one of your most watched movies. You might watch it even more than Terwilliger watched "Top Gun."

LAST MONTH'S AIRCRAFT: Gus Gustafson says that the featured aircraft was really a homebuilt. The wings were from a PT-17 and the rudder was "similar" to a Stearman C3 or C4. The fuselage is basically a Stearman frame that's been modified, with the cockpits repositioned. The rest of it is from pieces and parts of various Stearmans from the earliest to the latest. Give partial credit to Glen Matejcek, who guessed "early Stearman" but wouldn't pin down a model number (who could?).
Never let an airplane take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier.
"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." Leonardo da Vinci, as cited in the film One Six Right
On Thursday, August 31, area EAA chapter members and other aviation enthusiasts were invited to a rare treat: an intimate screening of the documentary film "One Six Right, The Romance of Flying," along with a short lecture and question and answer session by the producer and director, Brian Terwilliger.
Terwilliger grew up in a family whose parents would have nothing to do with aviation but his best friend had the passion. The both worked at McDonalds at age 15, and flew radio-controlled models. He says that they watched the movie "Top Gun" about a million times. Then his buddy got his pilot's license at 19.
Terwilliger also went to great lengths to secure historical footage of the airport and noted the many significant aviation events that took place at the field: visits by Charles Lindbergh; record-setting flights by Major Carl Spaatz, which were quickly broken by Bobbi Trout; Amelia Earhart and Pancho Barnes's closed course speed records; filming of the movie "Casablanca;" production of military trainers and gliders; Air National Guard deployments and many others.
Another item of interest: The Radio Plane company moved to the field in 1942, to build models used for military target practice. At the same time that Ronald Reagan was stationed there, one of the Radio Plane workers picked out to model for the company brochures was Marilyn Monroe.
