August's Program
John Broyles drove up to AirVenture this year with his wife Anita with a singular mission: check out the Light Sport Aircraft. John's been to Oshkosh before, only missing the show twice in the past 20 years. They took the opportunity to lodge at the Wisconsin Dells; Anita stayed behind at the Dells while John went shopping for aircraft on Thursday. He spent a bit of time at the ultralights area then moved on to light sport aircraft. He was interested in Cessna's prototype but was disappointed when he saw it. He's also interested in the aircraft diesel engine developments. He noted that the temperature was 102 degree F when he left Oshkosh. One highlight of the trip was the Bugatti race car that is saw; it was built and restored with impeccable workmanship.
Tom Chapman attended his third consecutive AirVenture this year, travelling to Oshkosh in an RV motor home with cousins from Noblesville IN and northern Mississippi. The group arrived on Monday evening and stayed at Camp Sholler through Thursday morning. His main mission was to be with relatives and just look at airplanes. He enjoyed the seaplane base, which had representative Seabees, Cessnas, and other models. He checked out a couple LSA kits, with the Sonex and Zenair models still appealing to him the most. All he bought while he was there were a couple of lunches and thee ballpoint pens. Tom didn't volunteer at the convention but claims to have washed dishes for the folks in the RV a couple of times. He didn't meet anyone famous, only his "cousins who tho't they were." And the didn't get to attend any seminars or lectures, but he "had to listen to lectures from cousins. I obviously don't need 'Ask Jeeves' anymore." While at the show h met Joe Kokes and his father for lunch. Joe was a former instructor at VU ATC, who he says is a very knowledgeable and capable A&P. Tom commented "I did hear a comment from an experienced pilot flying a Piper Comanche, concerning having to make a very steep, sharp turn from base leg to final on approach as directed by a controller. He said it could have been very dangerous if he'd been the least bit careless with his airspeed." Tom's favorite part was Jimmy Leroy's aerobatic show. He addes, "I saw maneuvers I'd never seen before. Saw a fantastic, restored Piper PA-12 (Supercruiser). My first airplane ride was in a PA-12 out of a hay field in southern Indiana. To me, the PA-12 just looks and has the lines the way an airplane ought to look." All said, did Tom enjoy the Oshkosh this year? "Sho' 'nuff!"
Troy A. Grover took the family van to Oshkosh, where he's gone every year for the past 13 years. In fact, he's been there more than 15 times. This year Troy went up with his mom and dad, and stayed in a cottage on Lake Winnebago from Sunday night through Saturday morning. Troy's RV-8A building client Chuck LaBarreare drove up from Memphis and spent the weekend with them, with all having a great time. Troy's main purpose for attending was to talk with people and spread the word about his business, plus see what's new for his customers. He did buy new seat belts and interior for the RV-8A in his shop plus a new wire crimper for large terminals and new Snap-On screwdriver. Troy got to network with some other builders, including a guy from Chapter 1312 who is working on an RV project, and met up with old Oshkosh acquaintance Jeff Sharmen, who Troy used to work with rebuilding wrecked airplanes in California. Troy got Jeff hooked on experimental airplanes and now he's built three. Troy went to the seaplane base for the first time, and also got to see Van's incomplete RV-12 LSA prototype, plus some very nice RV-10s at the show. He got to go to the RV builders' banquet and talked with lots of builders and had a great dinner and free beer; he recommends it to anyone who goes to Oshkosh. One of the highlights of his trip this year was going to the SpaceShipOne dedication and having Burt Rutan and Mike Melville sign his hat. He shook hands with Melville and told him "he was the man!" But his favorite part was on Friday, all of the four-engine bombers dropped bombs on the runway and about 100 other planes were in the sky all at one.
Chapter President Gus Gustafson drove up to Oshkosh with his wife, Faye, like he's done every year since he joined the EAA in 1961; he's only missed once (1966). They stayed at Fond du Lac for nine days total. Like many years recently, Gus's main purpose for AirVenture this year is because he is a member of the Vintage Board of Directors and Chairman of the Antique Judging and Awards. He didn't have much time for anything else except attend the EAA Chapter Presidents Breakfast and awards with Michael Mossman, who won what Gus says was "a much deserved award!" With just a little of time for shopping, he bought two pairs of sunglasses at the Vintage Barn Store on the field. He did get to meet Eric Lindbergh, grandson of Charles Lindbergh and staunch aviation promoter. He also got the chance to catch up with some old "oshkosh acquaintances, too many to mention, since this is the time to see old friends. Gus did manage to volunteer at the Tall Pines Café prior to the judging. Gus mentioned that they judges gave a Special Achievement Award to a Flabob Airport-area high school group that restored a 1941 Aeronca Chief. Although Gus's main interest is in Aeronca Champs and Taylorcrafts, his favorite part of AirVenture this year was watching the new F-22s perform. He concludes, "I was seen giving rides to gray-haired ladies on my golf cart. Faye will probably tighten my leash next year.
Seasoned Oshkosh visitor Glen Matejcek caught a ride north from Eagle Creek Airport in Vern Sullenger's Piper Cherokee, then met up with his friend Todd Ashcraft, who is an aircraft builder, aerobatic competitor and aeronautical engineer. From there, Glen and Todd headed to Juneau WI, where the visited a fellow who will most likely produce the wing kits for the plane Todd is designing. Eventually, Glen was joined by his wife, Robin, and stayed a total of nine days at Camp Sholler, where they were joined by ten or so fiends at various points during the week. Like he has done for the past 27 years, his reason for going to Oshkosh was "total immersion in aviation and friends." He didn't network with any RV builders but got to eavesdrop on some Zenair and One Design builder/friends. During the week he attended some seminars on drag reduction, Cleveland brakes, dynamic balancing, aircraft paint scheme design, fly-in communities, engine cooling system design and a few others. Glen bought some miscellaneous small airplane parts, like hardware, scat tubing, and others, plus a couple of books. Glen and Robin made it a point to introduce their friends from Scotland to "anyone of note we could find, as there is a certain 'stuffiness' in the UK that is absent here." Among those were Paul Poberezny, founder of EAA; Gene Soucey, aerobat and former world champion aerobatic competitor; Jack Hooker, of harness fame; several of the Frasca clan, of simulator fame; Will Whitehorn, president of Virgin Galactic; and four WWII Lancaster pilots. Most of the old "Oshkosh" acquaintances that he ran into we old co-works and several chapter members. He didn't volunteer during the convention but did go to a pre-convention work party with the "antiques - err, the antiquers." His favorite part of AirVenture was the F-22 display and the Lancaster tour, plus meeting the pilots, making new friends from Canada and Scotland. Glen concludes, "for the first time in almost 30 years of participation, I was offered rides on the grounds this year. Not just once, but twice. Then at the chapter meeting Gus mentioned that they are offering rides to the old and feeble ..."
Dirk Melchior strongly warns all aviation fans that "Oshkosh is too expensive; don't go." Getting hooked on the show specials, he bought the radios for his F-1 Rocket. One of Dirk's 2006 AirVenture experiences attests to the overall honesty of the attendees. He had been at the pavilion for a meeting or a show, then left his hat on a chair. He returned many hours later, and there it was; no one took it.
Kim Shumaker drove up to Oshkosh in his 1996 GMC Jimmy with his wife, Karen, making this his second consecutive trip AirVenture. They camped Sunday through Thursday in a tent in the main camp ground. His main reason to go was his love for aviation and to see the greatest accumulation of aircraft in one setting. He also took the opportunity to buy tools for their RV-9A project at a discount, picking up a pneumatic squeezer, rivet set and some rivets. The Shumakers spent lots of their time walking, meeting new people, learning about various projects and techniques, and seeing Van for the first time. They networked with plenty of RV builders, holding friendly conversations about their projects. Being just their second year at Airventure, they don't have any "old Oshkosh acquaintances," but they "met Troy Grover's parents from Texas and had the best time having dinner with them," Kim says. "We were able to laugh about everything we talked about. It was a great evening being with great people." Naturally for an RV builder, his favorite part was the RV parking lot, where he checked out different aspects of building to get ideas for his wing tip lighting. He took lots of pictures of RV-9As. Kim and Karen also saw Harrison Ford, standing only four feet away to take his picture. Kim claims that Karen tried to sneak her phone number to him. Kim sums up his AirVenture experience best: "My wife and I were in total awe again, even more so than last year. The campground was packed with every imaginable type of camper, tent, home on wheels, etc. People were sleeping under tarps on the ground, in the back of pickups and cars. Everyone was extremely friendly and seemed as excited about being there as we were. There is nothing like it in the world. Going to "other" air shows just doesn't seem worthwhile anymore. Coming home was torture knowing another year had to pass before being able to attend AirVenture - the world's best event - could happen again.
Did you attend AirVenture this year? If so, we'd like to read about it. Please contact the newsletter editor at michaelandkatie@tds.net or michaelandkatie@insightbb.com. He'll email a basic questionnaire that you can email or fax back. If you wish, feel free to write your own account, an of course, if you have any photos we'd love to see them.
New Members: Indianapolis resident Phil Kingery bought a single-seat trike ultralight in Tennessee during the second week of August. The builder is bringing it to the field, where Kingery will hangar it.
EAA Young Eagles Update: By newsletter publication date more than 1,252,343 Young Eagles have taken their first airplane ride.
Your chapter secretary will be out of town the first week of September and will miss that meeting. We need someone to take notes at the meeting, record attendance, and potentially shoot a few photos. If you'd like to help out but can't take notes fast enough, why not volunteer to bring a tape recorder? Please contact Michael Mossman at 765-336-4454 or michaelandkatie@tds.net or Gus Gustafson at 293-4430 or dalefaye@msn.com.
If you have an opinion on any story that appears in the newsletter, or any other aviation-related issue, we want to read about it. We will make editorial space available for your responsible comment. Please contact the newsletter editor at michaelandkatie@tds.net then send it to the newsletter editor at michaelandkatie@tds.net. Or just write what you wish and send it as an email.
Chapter 1311 will try to list the aviation-related events in Indiana and surrounding states, plus the major events across the country. Do you know of an event that isn't listed? Please inform the newsletter editor to get it included.

Gus Gustafson throws down the gauntlet for all of you who think you know something about antique airplanes. He provides this photo and invites all to try to identify the make and model of the airplane. Do you have any more interesting trivia about this airplane? We'd like to hear it.
For August's meeting program, Gus Gustafson led the chapter in a roundtable Oshkosh debriefing. We've asked our roundtable participants to expand on their meeting comments and offer those below:
Michael Mossman fulfilled his long-time goal of flying his homebuilt Zenair airplane to Oshkosh on Friday, July 28. Due to the late morning departure (fog and poor visibility) plus unplanned stops at Kentland IN, Watertown WI and Fond du Lac WI, Michael arrived at Oshkosh at about 7 p.m., too late to see any of Friday's show. After setting up his tent (it was the first time he camped in 30 years), he joined up with Glen and Robin Matejcek and their friends for dinner, one of whom was Colin Gow, a fellow Zodiac builder from Scotland. The next morning, Michael headed to the Chapter Leaders breakfast with the Matejceks and joined Gus Gustafson, where Michael learned that he won third place in the Newsletters Awards part of the program. After the program he got to meet Steve Krog, editor of the Zenair newsletter. Michael has been a frequent contributor to Krog's publication. After the breakfast he learned that thunderstorms were predicted for Sunday, so he had to decided to either leave after the show, which would have him flying more than 100 NM after dark so he departed before the show. He made one fuel stop at Poplar Grove IL the flew home. Michael says "Seeing all of these people watch me taxi through was a thrilling experience. Hundreds of people turned their heads as I made my way to the camp group. Yet it's amazing that with the thousands of faces how quickly a friend stands out to wave hello. I'd been to Oshkosh before and watched the homebuilts taxi by, wishing that I was one of them. Now that I am, hundreds of people were watching, wishing that they had flown in like I had. The volunteer folks at Oshkosh were fantastic. Several guys drove up in golf carts, offering bottles of water, or asking if I needed anything. I didn't have my tiedowns so a few minutes later another volunteer came by with a set and a hammer to drive them in. Flying to Oshkosh is something everyone show experience at least once in their life."
