Aeroflot Prepared to Buy 22 Boeing Jets
Aeroflot recently decided to lease five Airbus A320 jets and will pick up seven A321s.
The new acquisitions represent a major departure in aircraft strategies for the formerly communist party-owned airline. The Russian government has eased import restrictions on Boeing and Airbus planes following problems with their Ilyushin-96-300 passenger planes. In August all of their Il-96-300s were grounded after one disrupted a trip by President Vladimir Putin. The ban was lifted in October, opening the door for the markets for Boeing and Airbus.

SERVICEMAN UPDATE NEEDED: In December of 2002 Jim Griffin joined Chapter 1311. Shortly before the war with Iraq started Jim signed back up as a Major with the Marines and has been serving in Iraq. He had been receiving the newsletter via email but this past couple of months the emails to him have come back as undeliverable. Hendricks County Airport News
In a letter dated December 16, 2005 by Gary Regan, FAA Airports Engineer, the FAA has "... no objection to the grass runway provided the following conditions are met: A. Provide a minimum of 20:1 approach slope for each runway end; B. The area 125 feet each side of runway centerline and 200 feet off runway ends is clear of obstructions; and, C. No IFR effect for daytime VFR operations on Turf Runway ...." Although the letter addresses "a proposed ultra light turf runway" there are no size or weight restrictions mentioned in this document.
The grass runway greatly expands the envelope of the type of aircraft that may potentially use the airport by making the airport more friendly to smaller aircraft and aerial vehicles. Expanding the airport use envelope in the other direction is the "permission" to sell jet fuel on the field.
The FAA will be requiring a safety/phasing plan in the event that any shutdown of the existing facilities is necessary to build the grass runway, or "any change in the status or geometrics of runway, taxiways, aprons, or other operating airport surfaces ...."
Clark added that it may be two years before the grass is mature for on-going aircraft use.
Boone County Airport News
Dawes, wife, Diana and son Anthony had been visiting family in Florida and were headed home to Lebanon when they ran into thunderstorms over Georgia. Dawes had contacted Flight Service and was flying VFR when they ran into trouble. He contacted ATC and was vectored to several airports that were all socked in. Eventually, they exhausted fuel supply are were forced to descend through the clouds and low-lying fog, which he was able to do under control. Dawes said that they broke out just a few yards above the trees. He was able to stall the airplane and belly in to the trees, then the airplane crashed in the neighborhood below. Dawes was able to crawl from the wreckage but Diana and Anthony had to be extricated. While Diana spent some time in the hospital for injuries, some of the residents near the crash site took care of their two dogs and assisted the family with ground transportation. There were no injuries to anyone on the ground but Dawes' beautifully restored PA-23, N4370P, was a total loss.
At the next regularly scheduled meeting of the airport association, (Saturday, January 21, 3 p.m.) Dawes will speak about his experiences. All association members and any other interested parties are invited to attend.
Flagship Russian carrier Aeroflot is planning to buy up to 22 jet aircraft from Boeing. The deal may be worth more than $2.5 billion. Aeroflot in most interested in the 787 Dreamliner. The contract may be signed by the end of March.

Recently, Chapter 1311 has had several new members join who have expressed an interest in learning to fly, building an aircraft, partnering in an existing aircraft, or were looking for a Tech Counselor or other aviation-related service or skill. While the newsletter editor knows most of you he doesn't know all about you. We'd like to offer to our members to opportunity for more of you to network with the new members and make your skills known.
Be sure let the newsletter editor know if any of our members or their families has someone in the service, especially if they have been called up for active duty. We'd like to recognize them and thank them for representing us so honorably.
Dave Clark reports that the FAA has recently approved a proposal to construct a turf runway at 2R2 and to sell jet fuel.
Boone County Airport Association member Roy Dawes, his wife, and 13-year-old son narrowly survived a harrowing aircraft accident in Phenix City, AL, on the New Year's Day holiday.

Aviation Humor
You see, I learned to fly in a tricycle gear
It demands your attention on the take-off roll
This wicked little plane is just too much
I think I've mastered this slippery machine.
I relax for a second and from the corner of my eye,
You ground looping wreck; I hate your guts.

Taildragger
Taildragger, I hate your guts,
I have the license, ratings and such
But to make you go straight is driving me nuts.
With hours of teaching and the controls in my clutch
It takes a little rudder; easy, that's too much.
With one up front and two in the rear.
She was sleek and clean and easy to steer.
But this miserable thing with tires and struts
Take a little rudder; easy, that's too much.
Or it'll head towards Jones's as you pour on the coal.
Gotta hang loose, don't over control.
With a lot of zigzagging and words obscene
It's not that bad if you have the touch
Just a little rudder; easy, that's too much.
I suddenly realize with a gasp and a cry
That's my own tail that's going by.
Give a little rudder; Great Scott, THAT'S TOO MUCH.
